POE READING MENTORS PROGRAM

  
The Poe PTO Reading Mentors Program needs mentors for the ‘23-‘24 school year! It is not too late to join the program!
 
The goal of the Reading Mentors Program is to engage students in the joy of reading! We are looking for enthusiastic adult volunteers (parents, relatives, community members) who love reading, books and kids! Mentors will be matched with a 1st-3rd grade student to read with once per week this school year mid-October through May.
 
Time commitment: 20-30 minutes per week during school hours You will be able to select the day and time that works for you!

An orientation was held Wednesday, October 4, 8am in the Poe Cafeteria. See below for more information.


 

Reading Mentors DO:

  • Bring joy to the student’s day!
  • Build positive experiences with books and reading
  • Provide one-one attention for student
  • Use reading material driven by student interest
  • Expose students to many genres of reading
  • Consistent engagement throughout the school year

Reading Mentors ARE NOT:

  • A formal tutor or tutoring session
  • A small group lesson
  • Assessing the student’s skills pre/post sessions
  • Working on spelling lists or homework

Students are identified by the teacher:

  • In 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades
  • Possibly adding Kindergarten students in Spring 2024
  • To grow confidence
  • To practice speaking and reading
  • To be read to; to have more positive interactions
  • To build comprehension
